Mohamed Thakurufaanu- The Great

By Mr. Ali Shareef H.Filigasdhoshuge Male Maldives.

His dedicated services to the nation,
To liberate the country from the Portuguese,
They caused untold misery during their domination.
A hero most respected by young and old,
Won the place of pride in the history written in gold.
The grand mosque at the Islamic centre with its shining dome,
It is the symbol of our cultural heritage,
Named after him, with patriotic feeling and nationalism,
Centuries passed, generations have come and gone,
But his great name and other martyrs of the expedition,
Still recognized as the greatest heroes of the nation,
Fought day and night against the occupying force,
To achieve the independence and sovereignty of the country,
Gave up home and spent life-threatening eight years,
On the sea, in the sun and in the rain sometimes with tears,
Well done! Our immortal hero from Utheemu,
May God bless our freedom fighter Mohamed Thakurufaanu.

To mark the 424th death anniversary of Al Sultan Mohammed
Thakurufaanu. This poem has been published in 1996 by the
Maldives Today magazine issued in London.
