Qayoom said this speaking at the last session of the “Guidance of Ramadan” programme held at Dharubaaruge conducted by the Islamic Wing of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
Qayoom said that the disturbing reports of an initiative taken by the Dove World Outreach Center Church of Gainsville, Florida, USA to burn copies of the Holy Quran on September 11 to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York in 2001 is a result of their fear of the fast rate of the spread of Islam in the west.
He also said that the initiative taken by the Florida Church to agitate American people to burn a copy of the Holy Quran was a motivated act of hatred and religious intolerance and that it was appalling.
Qayoom also noted the atrocious acts of Europe and America against Islam and Muslims.
He also noted that despite the claims of Islamophobes Islam preaches peace and tolerance and is against killing of innocent lives.
The former President condemned the plans by the Dove World Outreach center, whose pastor, Terry Jones, has written a book called Islam is of the Devil. The phrase also appears on t-shirts and a Facebook page promoting the event at the church estimated to have about
